An American Airlines representative told Fox News the students had dined at the same restaurant in Ecuador the night before.
A Massachusetts Port Authority spokeswoman, Samantha Decker, told the Associated Press that 16 passengers reported feeling ill on the flight.
Decker said the passengers' symptoms appeared mild. She did not have any further information on what might have caused the illness.
CBS Boston reported that the victims were complaining of stomach-virus symptoms. No crew members or passengers outside the student group reported symptoms.
By 3 p.m. on Sunday, at least five patients had been released from the hospital in good condition, and emergency personnel had cleared the airplane to fly again, CBS Boston said.
